Acequia Madre GWEers replace plasticware with silverware in their school cafeteria!!!
Five Acequia Madre students, Elodie, Pearl, Norbu, Josie, and Bella met with Dr. Ruby Estrada and Lucy Stanus from Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) Sustainability Program. The students presented research on plastics and proposed their alternative solution of bringing silverware into their school’s cafeteria.
After coordinating how the school would get silverware and where it could be washed, the students decided to serve as a “lunchroom green squad” to help teach Acequia Madres’ students the new procedures for sorting silverware into bins.
The students rolled out their first successful trial run for the program in their cafeteria during lunch on May 6th of this year and will begin with the program fully integrated next school year.
